Ignored Screams, Broken Nails and Ten Feet Under - Justin Buenaflor
Drawn with pencil, coloured and inked on Paint Tool SAI I picked one of the most terrifying Urban Legends for me. Being buried alive. You’d be surprised by the fact that this Urban Legend is not just a legend. It has happened many times in the past, some recorded, most not.

My friends and I are trying to not get too rusty over the summer, so we decided to do themed bi-weekly illustration challenges. This was my entry for ‘Urban Legends’. Follow sketchbook-collective and judge us!  sketchbook-collective:

  2. Knowledge VS Time

    Installation

    Mixed media

To create a 2d abstract design, turned into a prototype which then turned into a sculpture/installation.

I was inspired by not having enough time to take in as much as one would like.

  3. Little Red Riding Hood

    Installation and Illustration

Acrylic, watercolour, ink, collage, MDF and wood stain

Pick an existing fairy tale and use collage techniques.

I used some collage techniques for the background, the halo and the red hood. I stained the background with watered down ink, distressed it, splashed some more and repeat until I was satisfied. I used coffee mixed with gel medium for the halo and a very thin layer of red acrylic for the hood. I left the face white because I wanted it to be the centre of attention even with the wolf on top of it.

The wolf was made entirely by hand using the scroll saw and a pen-like machine for the texture.

The idea is that the little girl was eaten by the wolf, and she’s afraid, thus the face.

  4. Destruction of Innocence Through Production of a Psychopath

    Phootography and Installation

Plaster moulds, photograph print, sculpture and black matte spray paint

To pick a topic related to Psychology, write an essay and make an art piece about it.

I picked a topic related to psychopathy because I am obsessed with people like them. I wanted to learn more about child psychopaths - and thus it begun.

The installation depicts a scene of a child psychopath’s purity being overwhelmed by the destruction of her emotions and sanity. The photograph portrays a child in white, feigning the idea of purity and sensitivity. Every child intrinsically holds a sense of innocence, of obliviousness to the dark, pessimistic world. But a child psychopath is different. They are aware of what manipulation of others allows them to do. They have a dark exterior that takes control of their actions. The mask is the psychopathic attribute that simulates normality. The black hands and black clouds contrast with the purity and serenity in the image. They emulate the dirt of destruction, and their emerging out of the mask trying to tear it away represents psychopaths’ need to act normal. However, their psychopathic tendencies will always want to break away and come out.

I intertwined twigs to create the mask and create that woven look, I moulded my hands using plaster and used matte black spray paint to turn it black. I used spread cotton balls and spray painted to represent the smoke and a photograph of Sherry Dubeau.

  5. Prostitutes of god
Illustration
Acrylic, watercolour, gold relief and ink
To illustrate a magazine cover for one of the Vice Guide to Travel videos.
There are women in India who are dedicated to Devadasi. This means they prostitute themselves in the name of their deity. Instead of focusing on the women, (and occasional men) I wanted to show how perverted this god is. In this illustration, I showed a god coming out a vagina. Hindu gods are always portrayed with really intricate head pieces, and I decided to use gold relief to create a head piece. There are sexual things going on in the head piece, such as 2 men holding hands while a woman’s head is in front of their genitals. Another one is near the top of the piece, where a woman spreading her legs. Prostitutes of god

  6. Faceless prince for Young Empires

    Illustration

    White gesso and ink

A vinyl cover illustration for Young Empires.

B&W: This toad-like character was what came to me while listening to Young Empire. I used calligraphy ink and paintbrush to do the lines, and then placed a big white mask on top of where the face should be using white gesso.

Coloured: I did a drip wash using watered down ink, and then I did the line work. I realized how flat the image looked, so I did a darker wash outside the image to pop it out some more using gel medium mixed with brown ink. I added the mask again using white gesso, but this time took the crown off, and instead put texture on the gesso drips to give off a crown-look.

  7. Old man face for Radical Face
Illustration
White gesso, extra heavy gel medium and watercolour
A vinyl cover illustration for Radical Face.
This old man just came to me while I was listening to Radical Face. I drew it with a pencil, scanned it, enlarged, flipped, darkened on PS CS5 and then printed with a laser printer. Did 3 coats of gel medium on top of the image, washed the paper off and then I did another coat on the bottom to glue it on the wood panel. The gel turned out very white because of the thin layer of white gesso on the wood, and the gel I used was extra heavy.  Old man face for Radical Face

  8. Lust: A consolation you have when you can’t have love
Illustration
Acrylic, watercolour and ink
Scissor brothers
The lines were done with a 3/0 india ink paintbrush.
In this assignment, we were to pick 1 of the 7 deadly sins, and obviously, I picked Lust. I knew right form the start that a lot of people were going to pick lust. There were going to be a lot of masturbation and sex paintings; and I was ready for that. But I wanted to shock some more, so I decided to do my professor fucking himself. I showed him my sketches which had his face on it. Needless to say, he turned red and giggled. But I also had a rough painting where I just placed a penis head instead of his face on it. He liked that idea better because it was surprising when you realize the heads were penis heads. But he knew it was him fucking himself.
The environment actually came to me afterwards. I went with a 50-50 underwater scene. There were pussy willows, mushroom heads, tongue clams, penis snails and sperm fish.  Lust: A consolation you have when you can’t have love

  9. Glutton: One who digs his grave with his teeth
Illustration
Acrylic, gouache, frisquet, enamel paint and ink
I wanted to portray a gluttonous angel.
The lines were done with a 3/0 india ink paintbrush.
In this assignment, we were to pick 1 of the 7 deadly sins, and I thought gluttony was a fun one. I created a character that represented this sin. I didn’t want to go too into the topic (which is over eating), so instead of showering this character with food, I wanted to show how disgusting it is. I stacked chicken wings on top of each other to represent the angel’s wings, and I covered it with frisquet to give it that grease effect.  Glutton: One who digs his grave with his teeth

  10. Always Pick to Eat Cheap in the City
Illustration
Acrylic, watercolour and ink
Cheap eats is a city guide created to help food junkies find affordable and good food.
This is an illustration for an article about cheap eats. We were to illustrate something that portrays affordable food in the city. It had to look appetizing. I decided to pick a burger and fries, to represent the sky dome, CN tower and Toronto cityscape. Always Pick to Eat Cheap in the City
